    6. Should Animals Be Kept In Zoos?

Are zoos a great way to teach people about the natural world and save species from extinction? Or a cruel and unnecessary way of using animals as entertainment, far from their natural habitats?  This short film explores the good and bad sides of zoos – and looks at how the best zoos are evolving to better meet the needs of their inhabitants. It also explores the future of the zoo – and asks whether new technology will enable us to have a different relationship with animals.

    5. The Nuclear Dilemma

First greeted with optimism and endless possibility in the 1950s, for many, mention of nuclear power now provokes concern – fears of radiation from nuclear waste and the disasters at Chernobyl and Fukushima front of mind. But as the climate crisis deepens, and the world’s energy demands continue to grow, the quest for a low-carbon future makes nuclear power hard to ignore. Made in partnership with The Open University.

    4. Should Human Kidneys Be Bought And Sold?

The first successful human kidney transplant took place in 1954. But today, the demand for kidneys greatly outstrips availability and as many as 1 in 10 kidney patients in the UK die before getting the transplant they need. Given that healthy people have two kidneys, and generally only need one, should people be compensated for giving a kidney to someone who needs it? In partnership with The Open University, this film explores the ethics of buying and selling kidneys.

    3. How Big Is Our Universe?

In 1977, Charles and Ray Eames, hugely influential American designers, released one of the most elegant and creative pieces of science communication of modern times - Powers of Ten. It took the viewers on a journey from a picnic blanket near Lake Michigan to the edge of the known Universe, and back again. Over 40 years later, as a humble homage to this groundbreaking film, Professor Brian Cox takes a similar journey through time and space, explaining how our understanding of the Universe has changed along the way.

    2. Is It Time To Reassess Our Relationship With Nature?

Is It Time To Reassess Our Relationship With Nature? Western societies tend to see nature and humanity as separate. Since the birth of agriculture, humans have been manipulating the world around them, harnessing, dividing and selling its natural resources. But are there other ways of relating to the natural world? Is it time to rethink our relationship to nature? A thought-provoking perspective by Dr Eleni Dimou at The Open University.
