Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a gamer in Japan? I bet you think it's heaven with a house full of games. Well, unless you are someone who is single or someone who cares more about their hobby than family, that dream could be true. For the normal guy with a family the idea of being a gamer in Japan isn't as great as you may think. For a start, Japanese homes are not so big plus the average woman isn't in to games unlike what the media will have you believe. So why am I telling you this? It's spring time in Japan and the Sakura trees are blooming but am I out taking in the beautiful sights? No, I'm bringing you another lovely volume of Retro Core 4 (^o^) In this show I take a look at the Sega Saturn version of Battle Garegga, a very cool yet tough shooter that was released in 1998. There's also another PS2 game on the show! Shock, I know. This time it's the not so great Transformers by Winky Soft. Yep, that one we all wanted to be amazing but never was. Finally there's Run Saber forte SNES. The closest the SNES ever got to Strider and not a bad game either.

  4. E17

We all know that the Sega Saturn is home to the best 2D shooters of the 90's but did you know that it was also home to the most popular console version of the Dezaemon Shoot'em Up Construction kit series of games by Japanese developer, Athena? There was a huge community of Saturn Dezaemon 2 game creators. Armed with just a normal retail Sega Saturn, memory card or floppy drive and a Saturn mouse, these people created some shooters that were good enough to be released as actual games! So sit back and enjoy 60 home made shooters in the second of a two part Retro Core 4 Dezaemon 2 special.

  9. E12

    12. Volume 12 - Out Run 1209 - Korean Master System - Alien VS Predator

Have you ever wondered what games you may have missed for a very common system? Well, in Europe the Sega Master System was king of consoles unlike the US and Japan where the Famicom / NES ruled supreme. In Europe Sega had it big during the 8bit and 16 bit days. So it stands to reason that the European Master System library is massive! But that's not to say every game was released in Europe. Oh no. The Koreans were busy ripping off other peoples work and porting the games to the Master System as well as 1 or 2 original titles. Some of which are actually pretty good. Check them out in the special Korean Master System game round up as well as Out Run 2019 for the Mega Drive and Alien VS Predator on the arcade.

  10. E11

    11. Volume 11 - JB King SFC Joystick - Sonic Blastman - Gynoug

Are you one of the many people that thought quality joysticks only came around in the last generation? well think again. Saturn had an Astro City arcade joystick! 100% same build quality as Japanese arcades. But even before that in the 16 bit days there were many good sticks. In this show I take a look at the JB King Joystick for the Super Famicom / SNES. This is one hell of a good stick. Game wise there's Sonic Blastman also for the Super Famicom and Gynoug for the Mega Drive. Better known as Wings of Wor in the US.

  11. E10

    10. Volume 10 - Double Dragon GameBoy - Marvel VS Capcom 2 DC - Verytex Mega Drive

    Finale

Hot on the heels of Retro Core 4 Volume 9 comes volume 10, not two weeks later. I'm hoping to bring the shows out on a more constant scheduled from now on. In this show I take a look at Double Dragon on the GameBoy, marvel VS Capcom 2 on the Dreamcast. One of the best 2D fighter of it's time IMO and the awful looking but great sounding shooter, Verytex on the Mega Drive. For more details see http://www.segagagadomain.com/RetroCorepage-main.

  12. E9

    9. Volume 9 - Yuu Suzuki Game Works, Heavy Unit MD Special

In volume 9 I take a look at the fantastic Yu Suzuki Game Works book as well as the Dreamcast GDROM that comes with it. Not only that but I put the Saturn and Dreamcast versions of Power Drift side by side. just ow good does the Saturn version look? I'm sure you'll be very surprised. Mega Drive shooting fans will Enjoy Heavy Unit. One of the first shooters for the system and a really tough one at that. For more details see http://www.segagagadomain.com/RetroCorepage-main.

For more details see http://www.segagagadomain.com/RetroCorepage-main.

  14. E7

    7. Volume 7 - Super Aleste, Steeldom, Vampire Resurrection

    3. Volume 3 - X-Kaliber 2097 / Sword Maniac / Young Indiana Jones / Japanese Arcade

It's time for another Retro Core and today I open up that other Metal Slug Gashapon / Gatcha Gatcha egg. What could be inside? Games featured in this show include a look at the western and Japanese versions of X-Kaliber 2097 / Sword Maniac for the SNES / Super Famicom and also a look at the really bad Instruments of Chaos staring Young Indiana Jones. Oh, I almost forgot. A quick walk through the arcade. For more details see http://www.segagagadomain.com/RetroCorepage-main.

    1. Volume 1 - Jewel Master

Retro Core 3 is over but that's no reason to be upset because Retro Core 4 is here to take over. This new series of Retro Core will feature less games per show however with luck there should be more shows per month rather than just the one show ever 5 or 6 weeks. So what can you expect to see in this 1st volume of Retro Core 4? Well, the main game this week is Jewel Master for the Mega Drive. Not such a widely known game and possibly a pretty good title that many may have over looked. I also take a video in the newly opened Hard Off. In fact it was only opened yesterday! So I headed off down there with my phone and grabbed a bit of video from their "Junk" section. Oh, and for fans of "Shite of the show" Don't worry. It will be back from volume 2 For more details see http://www.segagagadomain.com/RetroCorepage-main.

    29. Volume 25 - Fujitsu FM Towns

NOTICE - The Splatter House section has had around 1 minute cut from it due to a copyright claim by NamcoBandai. Sorry about that. The intro to that section is now missing. In the late 80's and early 90's home computer games were hit and miss in the west while most arcade conversions were a joke. In japan on the other had the world of computer gaming was a whole different story. We had the Sharp X68000 bringing us arcade perfect ports but at a very expensive price. This is where the Fujitsu FM Towns comes in. It's basically an Intel CPU powered PC with later models being able to run Windows. Yet it also features custom graphical hardware. Let's take a look at how a Japanese home computer coped with arcade gaming as well as original gaming for the home. All game footage in this video was recorded via RGB at 60fps from a real FM TOWNS II Fresh computer. No emulation was used in this video.

  25. E10

    10. Volume 10 - Sprite based 3D Arcade Games

Back in the mid to early 90's there were not that many polygon based arcade games mainly due to the technology being too expensive and well, really slow. 30. E5

    5. Volume 5 - Pandora's Box 3 Arcade review

NOTICE: The video quality of the Pandora's Box when connected to the capture card is not a fault of the Pandora's Box. The image is rather funky due to my capture card not liking the Supergun's video output. Pandora's Box 3, some people love it, others hate it. Many of the reviews are also quite bias. Today I take a look at the Pandora's Box 3 and tell you the truth about this little box of arcade hits.

  31. E4
