Friedrich Nietzsche was a German philosopher (1844–1900) and cultural critic who became one of the most influential modern thinkers, known for his radical critiques of traditional religion, morality, and absolute truth. He proposed that the decline of religious belief, summarized by his famous declaration “God is dead,” led to a crisis of nihilism that required a “revaluation of all values” to affirm life.

Twilight of the Idols (Götzen-Dämmerung, oder Wie man mit dem Hammer philosophiert — "or How to Philosophize with a Hammer") is one of Nietzsche's last completed books. It was written in just over a week (26 August – 3 September 1888) at Sils-Maria in Switzerland, and published in 1889. Nietzsche himself called it "a general introduction to my philosophy" — a compact, punchy synthesis of his mature ideas, which is exactly why it works so well as a first book.

The Gay Science (Die fröhliche Wissenschaft) is Friedrich Nietzsche's most personal work, first published in 1882 (Books I–IV) and expanded in 1887 with a new preface, a fifth book, and an appendix of songs. It consists of 383 aphorisms interspersed with poems and short essays, and it's where several of his most famous ideas first appear in print.

Thus Spoke Zarathustra is a philosophical novel by Friedrich Nietzsche published between 1883 and 1885 that follows the prophet Zarathustra as he descends from ten years of mountain solitude to share his wisdom with humanity. The work serves as a vehicle for Nietzsche’s core ideas, primarily addressing the death of God and the resulting crisis of values in a world losing its traditional religious foundations.

Walter Kaufmann is the author of the seminal 1950 book Nietzsche: Philosopher, Psychologist, Antichrist, which serves as a comprehensive study of Friedrich Nietzsche's work and life. Published by Princeton University Press, the book aims to provide a "comprehensive reconstruction of Nietzsche's thought" by dismantling the "Nietzsche legend" that had painted him as a proto-Nazi or unphilosophical madman.
